On October 3rd, the renowned Nov\u00e1 Spir\u00e1la (New Spiral) Theatre reopened in Prague. The theatre, located within the V\u00fdstavi\u0161t\u011b Exhibition Grounds, has reopened after being closed for 20 years due to the severe flooding that occurred in 2002.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Spir\u00e1la Theatre was first opened in 1991. However, following the floods of 2002, the structure remained closed for over two decades. During this period, the theatre faced various threats of demolition until authorities finally showed a genuine interest in its renovation. The reconstruction, costing over 300 million Czech crowns, was designed to preserve the original architectural elements while integrating modern technological features.<\/span><\/p>\n

The theatre has a very distinctive structure. Firstly, it boasts a circular auditorium with a 360-degree view, capable of hosting up to 800 visitors. Its rotating stages ensure that the audience enjoys a perfect view from any angle. The design maximizes interaction between spectators and performers, who often perform in the middle of the audience. In addition to the main stage, a smaller stage was created, originally used as a rehearsal space. This smaller space, with a capacity of 340 spectators, will host performances by theatre companies or small bands, as well as conferences and conventions. The smaller stage allows for a wide cultural offering, and with its intimate setting, it creates immersive atmospheres perfect for performances in direct contact with the audience.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to architectural restoration, the building was also renovated structurally and technologically. The work has strengthened the outer walls and allowed for the installation of new fireproof materials, meeting international safety standards. The main hall now features an acoustic insulation system that ensures impeccable sound quality.
\n<\/span>Thanks to the renovation, the theatre is now equipped with modern electrical and climate control systems, new audiovisual technology, and a video mapping system. The building is accessible to everyone, including those with mobility challenges, thanks to its inclusive design. The presence of elevators and ramps makes Nov\u00e1 Spir\u00e1la an example of a truly accessible and contemporary cultural infrastructure.<\/span><\/p>\n

The theatre’s reopening was marked by an extraordinary show titled Resurrection<\/em> (Vzk\u0159\u00ed\u0161en\u00ed), featuring performances by artists such as Nirvana, Madonna, and Adele, and tributes to the musical Jesus Christ Superstar<\/em>, which was performed in this theatre during the 1990s. The show will run until December.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nov\u00e1 Spir\u00e1la’s opening program also included the theatrical production The Bridges of Madison County<\/em>, a variety show called The Saturn Revue<\/em>, and concerts by renowned tenor Pavel \u010cernoch, accompanied by the Jan\u00e1\u010dek Philharmonic Orchestra.<\/span><\/p>\n

Various upcoming events are planned, including TEDx talks and performances by international artists, such as Japanese DJ Ryoji Ikeda. Thanks to its diverse offerings, Nov\u00e1 Spir\u00e1la is set to become a dynamic hub for theatre, musicals, sports events, and multimedia shows.<\/span><\/p>\n

The reopening of Nov\u00e1 Spir\u00e1la represents not only a rebirth for the city of Prague but also a significant turning point for the artistic and cultural community of the Czech Republic. After more than two decades of closure, the reopening of this important venue demonstrates how art can serve as a powerful tool for regeneration and social aggregation.<\/span><\/p>\n
